Lesson 2: Introducing Yourself and Asking About Others
1. Self-Introduction
In Mandarin, when introducing yourself, you typically say:
我叫 [Name] (wǒ jiào [Name]) – My name is [Name].
我来自 [Place] (wǒ lái zì [Place]) – I am from [Place].
我是 [Profession/Student] (wǒ shì [Profession/Student]) – I am a [Profession/Student].
Example:
我叫 Shahzadullah (wǒ jiào Shahzadullah) – My name is Shahzadullah.
我来自马来西亚 (wǒ lái zì mǎ lái xī yà) – I am from Malaysia.
我是一名学生 (wǒ shì yī míng xué shēng) – I am a student.
2. Asking About Others
To ask someone’s name, where they are from, and what they do, you can use these phrases:
你叫什么名字?(nǐ jiào shén me míng zì?) – What is your name?
你来自哪里?(nǐ lái zì nǎ lǐ?) – Where are you from?
你是做什么的?(nǐ shì zuò shén me de?) – What do you do? (What is your profession?)
3. Responding to Questions
Here’s how you can respond to the questions above:
我叫 [Name]. (wǒ jiào [Name]) – My name is [Name].
我来自 [Place]. (wǒ lái zì [Place]) – I am from [Place].
我是一名 [Profession]. (wǒ shì yī míng [Profession]) – I am a [Profession].
4. Vocabulary
Here are some vocabulary words related to professions and places:
学生 (xué shēng) – Student
老师 (lǎo shī) – Teacher
医生 (yī shēng) – Doctor
工程师 (gōng chéng shī) – Engineer
商人 (shāng rén) – Businessperson

5. Making Small Talk
In Mandarin, you often ask about someone’s well-being or how they are doing:

你怎么样?(nǐ zěn me yàng?) – How about you?
我有点累 (wǒ yǒu diǎn lèi) – I’m a bit tired.
